Millions of farm animals have benefited from better welfare since the Freedom Food campaign began in 1991
Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne joined young campaigners at the Houses of Parliament for the launch of the first ever Farm Animal Week supported by the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (RSPCA).
The week is designed to highlight the "Freedom Food" campaign to improve the conditions in which farm animals are reared, and provides RSPCA certification for farms that respect sound rearing standards.
Chris is pictured here with young RSPCA supporters pointing to the blue circle that says "Freedom Food - RSPCA monitored".
"Millions of farm animals have benefited from the better welfare introduced by the Freedom Food campaign since it began in 1991" said Chris Huhne. "In the last two years alone, there has been a big increase in the number of chickens covered by the scheme, but it is now also extended to salmon".
"The idea is to label food that has been properly reared with attention to animal welfare so that the consumer can see what they are buying, and the farmer can command a premium price rather as an organic farmer does" said Chris.
