Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne backed the new Eastleigh Rail Works on a visit with the business' boss Bruce Knights.
Mr Huhne is pictured here with Mr Knights and Wabtec Rail's manager Mr Chris Quinn, one of the many engineers who used to work at the rail works who have been rehired with one of the contractors.
Several companies are sharing the old premises and use them as and when required. Bruce Knights has taken a five year lease from property developers St Modwen.
"It is great news that employment is building up at the works and is now about 80 people in total spread out among several different contractors" said Chris. "There is great skill and expertise in the town in the rail industry and it is fantastic that it is being used again.
"Eastleigh without the railways is like Bournville without the chocolate or Port Sunlight without the soap. It is great to have some impressive rail engineering back in our town".
Bruce Knights gave Chris a tour of the marshalling yard in a restored diesel shunting loco, and also showed off some of the work coming in from as far afield as Wales and the West country for carriage renovation and repairs.
The old sheds will also be the venue for an open day in late May at which the many attractions will be some top-notch restored locomotives including the Lord Nelson and other Southern Railway favourites from the great days at Eastleigh works.
