EASTLEIGH PUPILS SHARE A DAY IN THE LIFE OF THEIR MP

November 14, 2008 9:35 AM

Chris Huhne with Sarah Tyburek and Robbie PembertonTwo pupils from Eastleigh's Quilley School of Engineering shared a day in the life of Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne when they shadowed his work in the constituency.

Sarah Tyburek and Robbie Pemberton are pictured here with Chris Huhne during their visit to his office when they were able to see a constituency surgery in progress and all the work behind the scenes to push local residents' interests.

The pupils met the MP at his home in Dutton Lane, Eastleigh before paying a visit to the Co-op shop in Hedge End where regional loss prevention manager Simon Tuck briefed the three on losses from shop-lifting and attempts to curb them.

Local residents' appointments with their MP were followed at lunchtime with a briefing to Hampshire sixth-formers studying politics about the Liberal Democrats' policies to tackle rising home repossessions and the recession through interest rate and tax cuts.

There were more meetings with residents on issues as diverse as tax, child support and housing needs before the three left to help with the poppy appeal at the ASDA superstore in Chandler's Ford.

"I'm very proud that our local Royal British Legion holds the branch fund-raising record in Hampshire, and this is a cause well worth supporting" said Chris.

Chris ended the day speaking after dinner to Liberal Democrats in Poole and answering questions about policy.

"It was an interesting day for us to see our local MP in action. I had not realised how MPs can help local people if they have difficulties with public bodies and I understand much better now what MPs do" said Sarah who wants to be a graphic designer.

Robbie, who wants to be a physical education teacher, said he had enjoyed the day off school learning a bit about politics. "People think politics is all about issues, but it really seems to be about people" said Robbie.
