EASTLEIGH UNEMPLOYMENT IS DEEPLY WORRYING

Chris Huhne MP Commenting on the sharp rise in unemployment in the Eastleigh constituency, Liberal Democrat MP for Eastleigh Chris Huhne said:

"This is a deeply worrying rise that confirms all that we have seen with recent job announcements from building firms and manufacturers as it confirms that Eastleigh is one of the hardest hit areas in the county. We have to do everything we can to press the real advantages of the area and attract new jobs, as well as pushing ministers into much firmer action to ensure that the banks support local businesses.

"It is crazy that I meet skilled building workers who have been made redundant by Barratts and others while projects that have planning permission like Twyford Road and South Street in Eastleigh are being mothballed for lack of funds. With more than 4000 people waiting for homes in the area, the Government should pick up these projects and ensure that they are finished. This would be a win-win: more homes, and more jobs."
