Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne wants people to be able to alert the emergency services with a text message to 999 in addition to a telephone call.
Mr Huhne has backed a Commons motion that calls on the Government to encourage the mobile phone industry to come up with a text message 999 number through which blue light emergency services can be contacted.
Mr Huhne said: "There is currently no way people can use text messages to contact the emergency services. Such a facility could prove a lifesaver for people who need to contact the police, fire brigade or ambulance service but who are unable to speak or have restricted movement".
