Students receive visit from Chris Huhne

February 12, 2009 5:00 PM

Chris Huhne with the Eastleigh College studentsAt a time when our country's Public Services are often over stretched and under resourced, Eastleigh College students benefited from a visit from Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne.

Students were delighted to have the MP give a talk to them on Friday morning as part of their course. The first year Public Services students examined the structure of government in the UK, and the impact that it has on the country's uniformed public services. It follows a visit made by the students to Westminster last November, where they toured the Houses of Parliament and took part in a workshop dealing with the role of Parliament in making the laws that affect our lives.

MP Chris Huhne was impressed with their determination and said:

"This is a group studying for a two year BTEC national diploma in the uniformed services, which should provide them with good background and skills to succeed in increasingly demanding roles. These are also jobs that require a high degree of responsibility.

"It is not enough any more just to muddle through: public services need to be as results-oriented as the private sector though I also stressed in the case of the police that they must rely on good cooperation with the areas they are policing. Without neighbourhood contact, intelligence about what is going on, and willing witnesses, the police cannot do their job effectively".

William Ronan, Public Services Lecturer at Eastleigh College said:

"It is always valuable for students to have the chance to listen to and ask questions of their MP. It was particularly so for our Public Services students as Mr. Huhne was able to draw on his role as Shadow Home Secretary to make some thought provoking points relevant to their studies."
