Commenting on the Eastleigh 10k road race on Sunday, which was in aid of Mayor Derek Pretty's charities, Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne who ran the race said:
"It was a great race this year because it was sunny and dry, unlike last year's drizzle with a strong north wind. I succeeded in my three ambitions this year: finish the course to raise some money for the Mayor's charities, come in within the first 1000 runners, and lop something off last year's time.
Given that it still took me 51 minutes to get round, I think I can say without fear of contradiction that there is no risk of me giving up the day job as the local MP. It was a great run, and it's a fun community event for everyone whether very fit or just trying like me. The reward at the end is the best fruit-cake in England.
"It is also awe-inspiring to see this new phenomenon of super-fit pensioners streaking past you into the distance. After the race, I talked to one gentleman aged 73 who had just beaten his son's time. I feel sorry for his son, who is not going to hear the last of it. The world is topsy turvy".
