The Health Ombudsman is taking legal advice about whether to investigate fully the decision to add fluoride to the local water supply, according to Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne who made a formal complaint.
Mr Huhne said that he understood that the ombudsman had received many local complaints about the failure to respect the local consultation, where more than 70 per cent of respondents had been against the move.
The Ombudsman has also decided to take legal advice on the matter, and will need time to consider not only all the complaints but also that advice before deciding whether to open a full inquiry.
"This is good news for local campaigners as it shows that the Ombudsman is taking seriously the prospect of investigating local complaints," said Mr Huhne.
Chris Huhne has opposed the compulsory fluoridation on the grounds that the benefits are unproven, and the risks and costs are also greater than previously thought according to recent peer-reviewed research.
"The best way of improving local teeth - especially among children - would be to ensure that there are enough NHS dentists," said Mr Huhne.
