Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne has launched the Cherbourg School's project to "Dig for Victory" on a Lakeside allotment.
The project has been helped by local firm B & Q with a £2,000 grant so that the year 6 children at the Eastleigh primary school can grow vegetables for use in the school kitchen.
Chris joined Headteacher Julie Greer, members of Cherbourg School's Year 6, and supportive adults Marilyn Webb and B & Q's Monica Simmons for the launch of the plan to relive the way people coped with the second world war.
"The kids are clearly really enjoying this project" said Chris. "It gives them not only a feel for the history of digging for victory, but also the satisfaction of growing their own food for the school kitchen.
"This is another great idea from an award-winning primary school that recently won the Arts Council's silver award under its Arts Mark scheme for promoting the creative arts".
The B & Q grant helped to buy gardening equipment and plants for the allotment. The first crop of broad beans and red onions are due in March, and the growing season has been specially chosen to ensure that it happens mainly in the school term.
The two scarecrows on the allotment were made by year 4 pupils so that the allotment is genuinely a co-operative effort across the school.
