Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne gave his backing to the Junior Hampshire Hornets at their weekly training and practice session in the town.
Chris is pictured here with members of the wheelchair basketball club for children aged 7 to 17 who meet at the Crestwood leisure centre in Eastleigh every week in term time.
"The kids have enormous energy, and come from all over South Hampshire and even the Isle of Wight to participate every Sunday morning. This is a great way for them to exercise and blow off steam" said Chris.
"I think this is a first rate initiative as it enables children with great difficulties to see that others are facing up to them as well. My heart warmed to the effort that they all put in".
Caroline Langron, the chair of the club, wants to boost club numbers beyond the current 15 members so that they can form more five-a-side teams.
Mrs Langron said: "The children benefit because they do not get enough exercise in school, and they immediately have a support network through the club to share their difficulties and successes."
Toni Dare, secretary, said that the club was affiliated to the Great Britain Wheelchair basketball association which meant that local teams could play competitively at national level.
The club has been supported by help from the Royal Variety Club and from the Winchester Roundtable, which means there is no shortage of the special sports wheelchairs.
In an appeal for volunteers, Mrs Langron said: "What we want most is now more members and more teams". More details about the hornets are available online from www.hampshirehornets.co.uk or from Mrs Dare on 07767436340.
