Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne has asked the EU's Competition Commissioner to look at whether the state aids paid to the Liverpool City Cruise Terminal were paid unfairly if it is allowed to compete with Southampton's cruise business.
Mr Huhne, a former Member of the European Parliament who sat on the Economic Committee, says in his letter to EU Commissioner Neelie Kroes that the change might potentially distort trade within the single market and between the member states.
