Liberal Democrats on the Council

Eastleigh Borough Council has one of the best recycling rates in Britain

Eastleigh Constituency is within the area covered by Eastleigh Borough Council and Hampshire County Council.

Eastleigh Borough Council is made up of 36 Liberal Democrat, 4 Conservative, 3 Independents and 1 Labour Councillor. The Liberal Democrats have led the Borough Council since they took control from the Conservatives in 1994. The Leader of both the Borough Council and the Liberal Democrat Group is Cllr Keith House who represents Hedge End Wildern Ward.

Hampshire County Council is made up of 51 Conservative, 25 Liberal Democrat, 1 Labour and one Councillor representing The Community Campaign (Hart). All six County Councillors within Eastleigh Constituency are Liberal Democrats. The County Council has been run by the Conservatives since 1997. The Leader of the Liberal Democrat Group on Hampshire County Council is Cllr Keith House, who is the County Councillor for the Hamble division.

Eastleigh Borough Council

Liberal Democrat-led Eastleigh Borough Council is considered to be one of the best run councils in the country. It holds "Beacon Status" and as such is officially recognised as an example of best practice for other local councils to follow. Successes of the Borough Council include:

  • A successful door-to-door waste recycling scheme giving Eastleigh Borough Council one of the highest rates for waste recycling in the country. In the year 2004/5, the Borough Council met its target of 33% of waste being recycled. The Borough Council has also successfully trialed a garden waste collection service which will be expanded to cover the whole borough in the coming year.
  • Raising its share of Council Tax by just 1% for 2005/6, and guaranteed that Council Tax will not be increased by more than 1% BELOW the rate of inflation for the next three years.
  • Introducing the new Nitebus service to make returning from Southampton City Centre to Eastleigh Borugh on weekend nights safer, easier and a lot cheaper. The Nitebus has been so popular that larger buses have had to be introduced.
  • Proposed a new local development plan which will ensure that any new housing is built within our existing towns and villages rather than on greenfield sites. This is in response to tough new housing building targets from the Labour Government, and is the best protection that our local countryside has ever had from developers.
  • Supported the creation of the Eastleigh Music Festival, which has successfully brought many famous performers to Eastleigh, such as Jools Holland, Rolf Harris, The Levellers, The Saw Doctors and Bob Geldof.
