Liz Jarvis selected as Eastleigh Liberal Democrats parliamentary candidate
Liz lives in the constituency where she serves as a school governor and as a borough councillor for Hamble and Netley. Since being elected, Liz successfully pushed for Eastleigh Borough Council to declare a 'Cost of Living Emergency' which demands that the government take action to address the increasing affects of rising energy bills, fuel costs, and inflation. She has also led the community effort to oppose Hampshire County Council's plans to build a gravel pit on Hamble Airfield - this plan would destroy a valuable greenspace, as well as increase traffic and pollution in the village.
In her career as a journalist, she has been published in multiple national newspapers and had a national column by the age of 25. She has edited three magazines and worked closely with the cruise industry in Southampton for nearly a decade. Alongside this, she is a trustee for a charity that supports families facing financial hardship. A passionate advocate for increasing female representation in parliament, Liz served as Vice Chair of Liberal Democrat Women where she pushed for enhanced diversity in politics.
The Eastleigh constituency is one of the most marginal seats in Hampshire, and is being targeted by the Liberal Democrats as one of the best prospects for victory in the South. The Conservative Party hold a slim majority in this traditionally liberal seat.
Former Eastleigh MP Mike Thornton said, 'I'm incredibly pleased that our members have chosen Liz to stand as our candidate for parliament. She is a rising star in the council group and has already gained a reputation for her ability to identify and work with residents to fix problems. Since 2015, our area has lacked the dedication and community focus that previous Liberal Democrat MPs provided. Liz is absolutely the right person to stand up for the interests of the constituency and I'm looking forward to working together.'
Liz Jarvis commented: 'I am incredibly proud and humbled to have been selected to be the Liberal Democrat parliamentary candidate for Easleigh and am completely committed to working tirelessly for the people in our community. I have been stunned by the actions of the government over the last few years; from Partygate to the mishandling of the cost of living emergency, we deserve both national and local politicians who put people first and genuinely care. This is personal to me. Eastleigh is my home and I have seen the negative effects of government policy in my community. We deserve better'.
Liz has already begun to assemble a community-led team to win in Eastleigh and the surrounding areas. For interviews or to support her campaign, contact organiser@eastleighlibdems.org.uk.
